It wasn’t until the summer before 8th grade in 2018 that I finally discovered a game that truly allowed the player to make choices with consequences: Detroit: Become Human. Although these choices appear to have significant implications for the story, the game ultimately has a single ending with variations trivial enough to have no significance in future games. For example, the well-known series of choice-based games by Telltale has the player make difficult decisions about how to interact with characters and handle difficult problems. For many years, I found that the possibilities of “choose your own path” games were limited, unsatisfying, and often dependent on the illusion of real choice. ![]()
